SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

Who can submit?

Anyone! Silk + Smoke accepts worldwide submissions. We especially encourage unpublished, emerging writers.

What to submit to Silk + Smoke

Our objective is to curate diverse short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction.

Our favourite genres are literary fiction, nature writing, fantasy, folklore, horror, absurdism and science fiction. But we welcome all kinds of weird and wonderful submissions. As we are based in Scotland, we would love to read submissions written in Scots too.

How to format your submission

Word limits

  • Fiction – max. 1,200 words
  • Poetry – max. 50 lines
  • Creative nonfiction – max. 1,200 words

Cover page

Please include a cover page with your submission with:

  • The title and word count of your piece (or line count for poetry)
  • Your name, location, a short bio about yourself (max. 100 words) and any links (social media, blog or website) you would like us to include

Font, size, and page numbers – Ensure your writing is in a legible 12pt font with page numbers in a Word doc.

Simultaneous submissions – You are more than welcome to submit work to us that you have recently sent out to other publications. If your work has previously been published (by another magazine or self-published by you), you can still send it to Silk + Smoke. As long the other publication gives you permission to republish, you can submit to us, too.

Multimedia submissions – If you choose to do so, you can include with your submission a video or audio file of your work being read or performed or a visual composition.

Number of submissions per person – Submissions are limited to two per person.

Where to send your submission

To submit to Silk + Smoke, simply send your work in an email to silkandsmokemag@gmail.com with your name and the submission category (fiction/poetry/creative nonfiction) in the subject line.

***

By submitting your work to Silk + Smoke, you are granting us permission to publish your writing on the S+S website and social media channels. Should we republish your work in another format (e.g. print edition), you will be notified and asked again for your consent.

Good luck!
